Biography
President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Tim McTiernan steers the strategic growth and success of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), fostering the development of strong research and innovative partnerships, and cultivating a robust academic environment in which graduates will be fully prepared for a 21st century workplace.
Appointed to his role on July 1, 2011, Dr. McTiernan’s clear-sighted and flexible approach is propelling UOIT closer towards its desired place among Canada’s top-ranking universities. He holds nearly 30 years of senior-level leadership experience across the areas of innovation; research administration and commercialization; social and economic development; and post-secondary education. Previously, Dr. McTiernan served as assistant vice-president, Government, Institutional and Community Relations; and assistant vice-president, Research and Executive Director, The Innovations Group; University of Toronto. Among his distinguished roles within the Government of Ontario, Dr. McTiernan led the initiative to establish Ontario’s Ministry of Research and Innovation. During this time, he was appointed acting deputy minister, assistant deputy minister and chief operating officer. From 1997 to 2002, he served as president, Canadore College of Applied Arts and Technology in North Bay, Ontario, securing funding and establishing a new campus location.
Dr. McTiernan spent the early years of his career building government relations in the Yukon as the territory’s deputy minister, cabinet secretary and chief negotiator for Land Claims, Self-Government and Devolution. Some of his most rewarding achievements involved successful land claim devolution negotiations. Notably, he served as a founding member of both the Dispute Resolution Board established following the Yukon First Nations Land Claims Settlement Act, and the Environmental Impact Screening Committee established following the Western Arctic (Inuvialuit) Claims Settlement Act. His expertise continues to guide and strengthen opportunities for indigenous people. In September 2014, he opened the UOIT-Baawating Indigenous Student Centre where indigenous students can cultivate an environment that promotes personal and cultural growth, and academic success.
From Kilkenny, Ireland, Dr. McTiernan earned his Bachelor of Arts (Mod) in Psychology and Philosophy from Trinity College in Dublin, and his Master of Arts and Doctorate in Psychology from the University of British Columbia.
