Biography
As Athletic Director at Dillard University, Kiki Baker Barnes has distinguished herself as an outstanding professional, community servant and mentor. She assumed the leadership role in Dillard’s athletic department in 2006. She simultaneously held the position of head coach of the women’s basketball team until March 2013. Her initial responsibility was to facilitate the return of the athletics program after it was shuttered following Hurricane Katrina. She has not only resurrected the program, but she has also grown the program into a national model of student-athlete success and community service. Since taking the helm, Dillard’s athletic program has seen the establishment of new sports teams and the university's first endowed athletic scholarship. A leader in sports administration, she was elected President of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)(2009), directing its growth after several universities departed for other conferences. Barnes has become a national expert in strategic planning, organizational management and program revitalization leading her to accept positions as a member of several organizations such as, the National Administrative Council of the NAIA, and the Black Coaches and Administrators Board of Directors Strategic Planning Committee. She currently serves as Chair of the (NAIA) Conduct and Ethics committee and was recently selected as an inaugural member of the NAIA Athletic Directors Association Board of Directors. A trailblazer as well, Barnes is the first female and first African-American president of the GCAC. In 2011 and 2014, her peers voted her GCAC Athletic Director of the Year. She was most recently named to New Orleans Magazine “People to Watch Class of 2014” and was honored by the Girls Scouts of Louisiana Southeast as a 2014 Woman of Distinction. Barnes also received the Gambit’s Top 40 under 40 of New Orleanians making a difference in the community in 2013. Barnes was featured as one of 6 women of empowerment in the 2012 Minority Report in New Orleans. Barnes is currently conducting research on the relationship between coach’s influence, student engagement, and student-athlete success.

The Relationship Between Head Coaches Influence and Student Engagement of NCAA D1 Women Basketball Players: Implications for Student-Athlete Success
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations. Paper 1901
2014-12-18
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recently passed new legislation highlighting the critical role coaches play in student-athlete success called the Head Coach’s Academic Progress Rate (APR). The APR measure does not calculate the actions of the head coach and is therefore an inadequate measure of coaches’ influence. There are numerous verbal accounts of the influence of the coach on student-athlete success, but there is little quantitative data to support this claim. As a result, this correlational study explored the relationship between head coaches’ influence and student engagement among a sample of 135 women basketball players at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) institutions. The Student-Athlete Perception of Coaches’ Influence, Student Engagement and Student Athlete Success Survey (SAPCISESASS), an instrument developed by the researcher, was used to measure coaches’ influence and engagement.

The impact of sport participation on student-athlete development has been widely debated. While most of the research has been centered on the effects of college participation on student-athlete development, little attention has been given to the coach’s role in their development. According to several prominent higher education officials, coaches are the single most important variable in the equation.
